Clean the scratched area thoroughly and sand lightly to roughness and remove any loose paint.
Apply painter’s tape around the scratched section to protect surrounding paint. Cut tape to tightly fit edges.
Fill any gouges in the wood with wood filler and let dry completely. Sand smooth.
Apply two coats of high quality exterior or interior paint primer to the scratches, allowing drying in between.
Once primer is fully dry, repaint scratches with two finish coats of topcoat paint matching your existing stair color. Allow proper drying between coats.
