Carbon monoxide safety
-
- Install CO detectors – Have properly working CO alarms on every level of the home and near all sleeping areas. Check batteries monthly.
- Service fuel-burning appliances – Have a professional inspect all gas/oil furnaces, stoves, water heaters, and generators annually. Check exhaust vents for blockages.
- Vent properly – Ensure vents and chimneys are cleared of debris, animal nests, snow/ice buildup that could block ventilation.
- Never idle vehicles inside – Don’t run cars, ATVs, snowmobiles, or generators in garages or near home air intakes.
- Know the symptoms – Recognize signs of CO poisoning like headaches, dizziness, nausea. If present, evacuate the home immediately and call 911. Get medical help promptly.
